Spanish Supermarkets Stock Plant Based Alternatives as Meat Struggles

Heura, A Spanish Plant Based Meat Brand, Has Increased Its Distribution In Recent Weeks To Match Consumer Demand

The outbreak of Covid-19 is causing Spanish consumers to shift to plant based alternatives, according to figures released from Heura foods, a Spanish plant based manufacturer. The company, which is backed by the Spanish Government, has said that demand is up 13.7% in recent weeks and continues to grow.

Prior to the pandemic, Heura foods was already the fastest growing plant based start-up in Europe, with sales up 450% from 2019 levels. They had announced that they are entering into the Latin market, planning to open supplies to Chile in June 2020.

Irish Meat Plants Face Further Struggles

The rise in consumption of plant based meat alternatives coincides with a difficult time for the Irish Meat industry. Alongside reducing consumer demand, meat processing plants and abattoirs are facing outbreaks of COVID-19. Rosderra, the largest pork processing company in Ireland announced that 120 workers have tested positive for the virus at their plant in Roscrea.

The outbreak, alongside a reported two others at meat plants in other parts of the country has raised questions and concerns for the future of the industry, which employs 170,000 nationwide.
