Nori: The New Superfood?

What’s Nori, and why does it matter?

Nori is that dark green, almost black seaweed wrap that you find around your sushi. But did you know that far from just being the wrapping, it’s a nutritional powerhouse and one of the best sources of Iodine (which is essential for thyroid function)? I remember the first time I ate Nori. It was at a sushi restaurant when I was five years old. My parents took me on holiday to Sydney, which was a big thing. Anyway, the waiter came down and spent about 10 minutes carefully teaching me how to pick up and eat with chopsticks. After listening to his instructions and practising the movement, the time came to demonstrate my abilities. I picked up the chopsticks and stabbed them into the sushi roll, and ate it off like a savage. My family still reminds me to this day.

Anyway, back to the Nori. Nori, and many seaweeds in general, are iodine superfoods. Seaweed is considered the best source of Iodine, and a 10-gram serving has up to 1.5x the daily RDA.

Why Do You Need Iodine?

Your body can't produce Iodine itself, which means you need to get it from your diet. It plays a vital role in keeping your thyroid functioning properly. Insufficient Iodine can lead to several health complications, including:
- Hypothyroidism
- Goitre
- Birth Defects

What Else Does It Do?

Apart from being one of the richest sources of Iodine, Nori is packed with other plant-based nutrition that your body needs. It has:
- Tyrosine for thyroid function, protein building and enzyme function
- Calcium (Nori can have up to 10x the calcium of milk)
- Source of DHA & EPA fatty acids
- As well as vitamins A, B, C, E & K

Some studies have also shown that Nori contains significant levels of Vitamin B12. Although more research seems to be needed regarding this.

Careful Now

While Nori is packed with health benefits, it’s SO RICH in Iodine that it's relatively easy to have too much. Symptoms of too much Iodine can be pretty similar to the symptoms of not having enough.

Key Takeaways

Nori is an excellent source of Iodine and other essential vitamins and minerals. Incorporating some into your weekly diet is an effortless way to get enough Iodine for healthy thyroid function. So, get your creativity on and invite some friends over for a sushi platter; your thyroid – and your mates – will thank you.
